Up Do or Down Do?

Up Do or Down Do? That is a great question!

There are so many wedding hair style choices and you have to choose one! Sometimes! We have brides that can’t decide, so they will do both!  We’ll do one style for the ceremony and meet them in a few hours and do another style for the reception!

If you need to choose just one style here are some thoughts we’ve discovered along the way.
Generally, Up Hair styles will stay where they are pinned.  Down Styles can change depending on your hair. We can’t do much about gravity, although we try!

The style you choose should make you feel beautiful and comfortable!  If you normally never wear your hair up and it feels strange, then it’s ok to wear it down. Bridal hair doesn’t always need to be up to be elegant. This is why it’s important to do a trial and try both styles!

There are 3 main factors to consider when trying to decide on up or down. Hair length and texture, dress style, wedding theme and the crazy weather are a few things to think about to help you make your decision.

#1

Hair length and texture is a big one!   If you have hair that doesn’t curl well, it’s a lot to ask of your hair to stay down and curly for such a long and maybe hot day.  You need to be ok with the fact that it might fall a little bit.  There are lots of tricks that we can do to make long, straight hair stay curled if that’s what you would really prefer. This is also good to try before the big day! If you have long hair, it’s nice to show it off, so wear it down! Short hair can look like an Up Do once we pin up the sides and add your hair accessories and veil. Hair extensions can help thin, fine hair look thicker for Up and Down Dos.

#2

Dress style and theme of your wedding is important.   If you have a dress that has beautiful detailing in the back, it might be nice to pin your hair up to show that off!  If you have a gorgeous back and want to show that off, pin your hair up! Strapless dresses can be less bare if you wear your hair down.  Bohemian style wedding are great for long loose curls and braids. Vintage style weddings are perfect for low buns with finger-waves or long, loose curls swept to one side.

#3

The weather is always hard to predict, especially in Pittsburgh.  If it’s going to be a super hot summer day, Up hair may be the best choice. If it’s a perfect hair weather day down is a great option. You can always decide that day if you want up or down depending on the sunshine or raindrops.  This is another good reason to practice both styles before the wedding.

There is no rule set in stone but, Up is great for hot weather, unruly hair and it’s shows off your dress!
Down is great for cooler weather, hair that holds curl well and for strapless dresses to cover your shoulders.
These are all suggestions and there are exceptions to everything! It’s so nice because you can really do whatever you want! There are no rules! Plan your hair trial with an Up Do and Down Do and then the decision won’t be so hard to make.

A Bridal Trial is so Important!

This is an example of what a bridal trial looks like!  We tried up and down and all around, and finally found the one!

Bridal Trial

It’s so important to us that your wedding day is perfect. We are responsible for your hair that day and we take it very seriously! A bridal hair trial is super important.  You want to look back at photos and remember every detail and hair is a big one!

We recommend a trial as soon as possible. We suggest sooner rather than later! It’s good to know if you will like what we do. If you don’t like what we do, you’ll need to find someone else. Hairstylists book quickly for weddings so it’s good to plan early. We’re taking weddings for next fall already!

Pinterest is great for ideas!   Just start looking and pin everything that you may want to try. Some brides know for certain the way they want their hair, whether they like their hair up or down. It depends on the style of your dress as well. You may want to show off details on the back or it may have a high neckline. Hair can be adjusted around all of these details.

I like to start a trial looking through your photos and talking about what you like and don’t like. The front of your hair is the most important and hardest part to decide on. We try several ways and eventually one them will be just perfect.

A trial usually takes about an hour. You should arrive with dry hair. At this time we can discuss the best way to prepare your hair for the big day.

Normally, I curl all of the hair first to get some texture. It’s a great time to see if you like your hair down and curly. Next, we try half up/half down. Then we can try a bun. The bun can be centered or to one side, high or low, big or small, smooth or detailed. Recently, we’ve had several brides wear their hair down and curly. Some are doing very high, big, full buns. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself! The trial is the best way to figure this out!

2 of our Brides in 2 Spring Wedding Magazines!

We’re so happy to say the we have 2 of our brides featured in 2 spring wedding magazines!

Cassie Fickley was featured in Whirl Wedding Spring/Summer 2017 edition. Brianne Conley was featured in Pittsburgh Magazine Weddings Spring 2017.

This is Cassie Fickley!  Seeing these photos makes me want to get married again!  These photos are from Sky’s the Limit Photography!

Cassie has such a beautiful, simple elegance and her fabulous ballerina bun was perfect! It was a great morning for me to go to the Hotel Monaco and style her hair and her bridesmaids.  I love that hotel! It was so great to meet all of Cassie’s friends.

Wedding days are so special and I get to be a part of all of the fun!  I’m usually the first person to arrive and get the day started.  Hair and makeup is the first event of the day!  Whoever isn’t getting hair done can have makeup done.  The timing goes smoothly and everyone is finished in no time!   Everyone gets dressed and then pictures start. It’s a whirlwind!  It’s important for me to keep everyone on schedule.  I don’t want to hold up the rest of the day. I’m always grateful when someone agrees to go first!  🙂

This is Brianne Conley!  Such amazing photos by Hot Metal Studio!

Harbor met with Brianne and they spent some time together deciding what style was the best choice for her.  Brianne finally decided on a side swept deconstructed braid.  Harbor and Christina went to Brianne’s mom house the day of the wedding and styled all of bridesmaids as well!

I LOVE the dress with that bow!  So beautiful!

We can do hair for weddings anywhere!  We’ve done hair for our brides in the most beautiful places.  We just need to have some electricity and a place to put our irons and spray!

We’re looking forward to an amazing wedding season and meeting lots of new wonderful brides!
