Up Do or Down Do?
Up Do or Down Do? That is a great question!
There are so many wedding hair style choices and you have to choose one! Sometimes! We have brides that can’t decide, so they will do both! We’ll do one style for the ceremony and meet them in a few hours and do another style for the reception!
If you need to choose just one style here are some thoughts we’ve discovered along the way.
Generally, Up Hair styles will stay where they are pinned. Down Styles can change depending on your hair. We can’t do much about gravity, although we try!
The style you choose should make you feel beautiful and comfortable! If you normally never wear your hair up and it feels strange, then it’s ok to wear it down. Bridal hair doesn’t always need to be up to be elegant. This is why it’s important to do a trial and try both styles!
There are 3 main factors to consider when trying to decide on up or down. Hair length and texture, dress style, wedding theme and the crazy weather are a few things to think about to help you make your decision.
#1
Hair length and texture is a big one! If you have hair that doesn’t curl well, it’s a lot to ask of your hair to stay down and curly for such a long and maybe hot day. You need to be ok with the fact that it might fall a little bit. There are lots of tricks that we can do to make long, straight hair stay curled if that’s what you would really prefer. This is also good to try before the big day! If you have long hair, it’s nice to show it off, so wear it down! Short hair can look like an Up Do once we pin up the sides and add your hair accessories and veil. Hair extensions can help thin, fine hair look thicker for Up and Down Dos.
#2
Dress style and theme of your wedding is important. If you have a dress that has beautiful detailing in the back, it might be nice to pin your hair up to show that off! If you have a gorgeous back and want to show that off, pin your hair up! Strapless dresses can be less bare if you wear your hair down. Bohemian style wedding are great for long loose curls and braids. Vintage style weddings are perfect for low buns with finger-waves or long, loose curls swept to one side.
#3
The weather is always hard to predict, especially in Pittsburgh. If it’s going to be a super hot summer day, Up hair may be the best choice. If it’s a perfect hair weather day down is a great option. You can always decide that day if you want up or down depending on the sunshine or raindrops. This is another good reason to practice both styles before the wedding.
There is no rule set in stone but, Up is great for hot weather, unruly hair and it’s shows off your dress!
Down is great for cooler weather, hair that holds curl well and for strapless dresses to cover your shoulders.
These are all suggestions and there are exceptions to everything! It’s so nice because you can really do whatever you want! There are no rules! Plan your hair trial with an Up Do and Down Do and then the decision won’t be so hard to make.

Getting Ready for the Big Day!
How do we get ready for the big day?
Wedding season is coming up quickly! We can’t wait to meet our new brides and help them create their perfect wedding day look. We get questions every day from brides and bridesmaids asking how to prepare their hair for the big day. These 5 issues are the same for both the bride and bridesmaids.
*Please have everyone arrive with DRY HAIR
*Shampoo or Not the Morning of?
*Bring Pictures
*Flat Ironed Hair
*Using Mousse or styling products
Shampoo or not to Shampoo the day of? That’s a huge one! It really is a case by case decision. If you know that if you won’t feel good about yourself or about your hair if you don’t shampoo then by all means shampoo your hair that morning! Just make sure that your hair is really dry and cooled down before we start styling your hair.
For most styles, hair does style better if it is not freshly shampooed. Hair that is freshly shampooed can be frizzy and flyaway. On the other hand, hair that is too oily is just as bad and can be worse. Oily hair won’t have any volume and can look separated. Most of the time you know when your hair is at it’s best.
At the time of your trial we can discuss what’s best for your hair type. Also at that time we can suggest the proper products you can use ahead of time so that your hair is ready to go.
If you do decide to shampoo that morning, it does need to be DRY hours before we start your styling. Hair that has been recently dried always carries a little moisture and won’t curl, tease or stay pinned. Hair needs to be dried and needs time to cool down so that it will handle better.
Timing is so important the day of the wedding and we want to keep you and your group on schedule. If someone arrives with wet or damp hair that almost doubles the time needed for that person.
If you choose a style for the wedding day that is down and curled or even up and curled, PLEASE don’t use a flat iron on your hair. Once hair has been flattened with an iron it doesn’t curl very well at all! If you want it straight for the rehearsal dinner, then we suggest you shampoo that night or early in the morning.
It’s helpful to use some mousse or styling product in your hair once you shampoo and before you blow-dry. It’s helpful for the style to have more staying power if some product has been dried in.
Normally we like to do a trial with the bride so we know what we are planning for the wedding day. It’s not usually a good idea on the wedding day to not be sure what you do and don’t like. If you are a bridesmaid, it is really helpful to think of styles that you like and save some photos for us. Pinterest and Instagram are amazing resources of every style imaginable. Sometimes it’s even helpful to have photos of hairstyles that you don’t like! Pictures are for sure worth a thousand words!
We love to make you look beautiful, but we need a little help from you! The outcome will be so much more amazing if you follow these simple rules for getting ready for the big day!
Wedding Hair- Dovetail Braid
We’ve know Kristy for so long! Kristy and some of her friends went to Point Park College and lived at Washington Plaza Apartments. Harbor and I were so happy to do hair for her and her bridesmaids for her fabulous wedding day. Her family and friends couldn’t have been nicer! Kristy has very think, long, blonde hair and the dovetail braid was the best way to show it off. Her hair has been waiting for this day!
The Dovetail Braid showcases all of her beautiful hair. We added lots of spiral curls and didn’t tuck everything into the braid. The curled pieces were lightly pinned so they weren’t flying around too much. The back we pulled several sections into ponytails that were flipped through and lightly pulled apart. The beaded pearl accessory is actually a headband. We took off the ribbon and pinned it in place. It’s great to use jewelry in your hair.
Wedding mornings are always so much fun. It’s nice when we travel to the bride, as you can see, the bridesmaids are able to do other things, like makeup, while we do hair. It takes stress out of the day when you don’t need to drive to the salon. The timing works out perfectly. We figure out when you need to be finished with hair and work back from there. We usually add another 1/2 hour just in case. It helps if everyone is there and ready to go. Make sure that everyone has dry hair. Pinterest and Instagram have about a million pictures of hairstyles to choose from. It’s great to be done early so you can relax before getting into your dresses.
We can’t wait to see professional photos of Kristy in her dress! I’m sure the wedding was so much fun. Best wishes Kristy!
